The Ecco chair was created by the newly established design company Møre Designteam, (Svein Asbjørnsen, Jan Lade and Svein Leirdal) in 1971. The concept, which was developed in co-operation with the furniture producer L.K. Hjelle AS, won 1st price in the Norwegian furniture industry council’s competition that same year. Ecco was purchased by the National Museum in 2021, and is now ready for re-launching — after 50 years. The idea behind this concept, was to separate the rear edge of the seat from the back, thus achieving a suspension in the steel structure in the seat and backrest. The name Ecco reflects the design language of a rockingchair, and the chair was a small revolution in many ways. It was one of the first products with a totally new moulding technic for the upholstery industry in Europe, being brought to Sykkylven by Mr. Hermann Mehren, the owner of the local moulding factory Sandella AS. Also, the construction of this chair made it possible to use a removable, washable stretch fabric on the separate surfaces, specially developed by Bayer Dralon Fiber in Switzerland, in cooperation with O.A. Devold AS in Langevåg, Norway.

*Ecco was delivered to tourist ships on the Nile in Egypt. (Ulstein Verft AS, Norway)
